IDIOTS, MORONS, IMBECILES, CRETINS

Do you know difference between these words before you use these words to lash out at someone?
According to British legal stature, an idiot is an individual with an IQ of less than 20, an imbecile has an IQ of between 20 and 49, and a moron an IQ between 50 and 69. Cretins are specifically persons with a deformity or mental retardation caused by a thyroid deficiency; cretinism is now more commonly called hyperthyroidism. Idoit isderived from the Greek for "private person" (as in idiosyncracy); moron is from the Greek for "foolish"; imbecile is a construction from a Latin phrase meaning "without a stick"; cretin comes, via the French, from the word "Christian" and implies a holy person - God's fool" as it were.

Just a little pointer, an under active or deficient thyroid (I.E) not producing enough would be classed as hypothyroidism not hyper.
I had to post this comment,oh the irony :)

An IQ of under 50 is tough to imagine, but can a functioning adult really have an IQ under 20? Does anyone have any stats on the % of the population in this category? (Exclude Norfolk in the UK as this will skew the figures).

So, how does a Cretin rate on the intelligence scale? - you haven't posted on that yet, only that it's meaning is derived from 'Christian.'

Moron is actually from the Greek word moros, which means dull...not foolish.

@Steve Milligan Statistics actually gives us a way to calculate that. IQ scores have a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. Thus a person with an IQ of 19 would be 5.4 standard deviations below the mean. This tells us that roughly .000003% of the population has an IQ of 19 or lower. In other words, 3 out of 100 000 000. That means that here in the US, there are probably 4 people who fit into that category.

My face is misshapen and my neck mal-aligned as a consequence of complications during my delivery. Over the years, teenage boys and young guys in their 20s would call me "retarded". As I am verbally gifted, I would refute them with the retort, "That depends. Can YOU spell correctly pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis?"

@ David R Lentz, Good for you!!! I am a nurse so I know what the word means. I must say I have never seen it other than in a clinical situation. I would love to have seen their expressions when you dropped that word. I bet the first thought/comment was, "That isn't a real word!" This gave me quite a tickle. As a growing girl, I experienced the usual teasing and pressure from my peers, and I found comfort in leaving them speechless too. I used to call them names they had to look up. To this day, when I run into one of them, they remind me of that. I wish you the best David.
